Since the establishment of the Institute (former Plant Genetic Resources Center of Ethiopia) in 1976 systematic crop germplasm exploration and collection operations have been undertaken in the different administrative regions of the country, covering a wide range of agro-ecological conditions by setting priorities based on the economic importance, degree of genetic erosion, degree of genetic diversity, etc. of the crop species.

Walking to a crystal clear blue sky, you sit atop a rocky outcrop, the early morning rays warming your back as your eyes scan the wide expanse of alpine splendour in front of you. Through the crisp morning air your gaze is suspended as a flash of movement catches your eye. A family of wolves trots into view, prancing, nipping, sniffing. The lead wolf halts, your red jacket has caught her eye, now locked on yours.

Food security in mountains: High time for action

The worsening global financial crisis threatens to perpetuate food insecurity worldwide and mountain people are more vulnerable to food shortages due to their isolated, inaccessible and remote location. The changing climate further exacerbates food insecurity in mountains as they are among the ecosystems most severely impacted by climate change.
